The One Thing You Should Never Order at Costco's Food Court
If you're shopping at Costco, it's only natural that you'd want to take advantage of the food court while you're there. The prices on those hot dogs and pizza slices are hard to beat! But there's one thing you should steer clear of at Costco if you're trying to follow a healthy diet. The cold brew mocha freeze has a whopping 71 grams of sugar.
We asked four RDs to look over the nutrition menu from Costco—unfortunately, a 2018 PDF is the most recent information the company could provide us with—and all of them said to avoid this coffee drink.
And before you head to the warehouse, check out these 17 Secrets You Never Knew About Costco.
Why should you stay away from Costco's Cold Brew Mocha Freeze?
"I consider this drink to be more of a dessert than a beverage at 390 calories and a whopping 71 grams of sugar. That's like eating almost 18 sugar cubes," says Lindsey Pine MS, RDN, CLT. "According to the American Heart Association, men should aim to eat no more than 36 grams and women should aim to limit at 25 grams for the entire day."
In addition to the high sugar count, the calorie count is pretty high for a coffee drink. "This beverage provides 390 calories, which is almost enough for a small meal," says Mary-Catherine Stockman, MPH, RD, LDN, owner of Busy Babes Nutrition, LLC. "This drink also contains 78 grams of carbohydrates. While our bodies need carbohydrates for energy, the average woman needs 45-60 grams of carbs per meal and the average man around 60-75 grams per meal. That means this drink well exceeds a full meal's worth of carbohydrates for most people."
This sugar- and calorie-laden drink just isn't worth it—even at Costco's price point. Costco is serving a limited menu during the pandemic, but if your store happens to have the hot latte, it's a much healthier option.
