The #1 Skincare Routine For Ageless Skin, Top Dermatologist Says

Check out these secret tips for glowing, youthful skin.

When a youthful appearance and glowing complexion is your priority, the first thing to address is your skincare routine. After all, if your skin doesn't look young and radiant, neither will you. A healthy, happy complexion creates a chain reaction of all good things. Not only does fresh, ageless skin make you look great, but it also makes you feel great, which is the most important thing. It can positively affect your emotional well-being, boost oodles of self-confidence, motivate you, and so much more. So, we're here to share the secret scoop on the #1 skincare routine for ageless skin, according to a top dermatologist.

Caring for your skin is quite essential to your overall health. You may not realize this, but your skin is your biggest organ, as it completely covers your form. It protects your body from germs, UV light, and environmental factors. Just the right tender loving care can keep your skin healthy, damage-free, and give it a youthful appearance.

We spoke with Dr. Leyda Bowes, board-certified dermatologist about the #1 skincare routine for ageless skin she swears by. Bowes tells us, "A highly-effective skincare routine for ageless, healthy skin includes four important steps." Each step should be done in the sequence listed in your skincare routine. Cleanse your skin thoroughly with the right products

For this step, Bowes says you should select a "deep-cleansing and purifying" cleanser, one that is hard on impurities, make-up, toxins, and sweat, but note that it shouldn't be harsh on the barrier of your skin. Bowes explains, "This can be accomplished with cleansers that are able to purify the skin as well as restore the skin barrier elements with their high content of ceramides. Some products even go beyond the functions of cleansing and hydration—they also include antioxidants like green tea to help the skin fight oxidative damage and the aging caused by free radicals." Some cleansers that fall under this category to consider include Cetaphil's Gentle Skin Cleanser and PIEL ETERNA's Purifying Cleanser.

The next step in the process is to work on any skin-related issues you'd like to fix, such as wrinkles, acne, or pigmentation. Bowes advises, "Retinol products help us keep pores clean, fight acne, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles," adding, "Skin brightening serums such as those with high content of vitamin C, niacinamide, and arbutin help lighten dark patches and even out skin tone."

Moisturize to seal and restore

It's important to moisturize in order to restore and seal your protective skin barrier. This will aid in keeping your skin plump and radiant, while also assisting in retaining water. Bowes points out, "This can be achieved with products containing squalane, ceramides, and essential omega fatty acids."

The last critical part of the process—but certainly not least—is to protect your skin from the age-induced and harmful effects of the sun's UV rays. It's so important to apply a sunscreen that contains SPF30 or more on a daily basis. Bowes adds, "It is also important to protect our skin from the aging effects of environmental toxins and free radicals by including antioxidants in our sunscreen and in our skincare in general."
