There Are Shortages of These 2 Grocery Staples Right Now, Shoppers Say
Grocery shopping for the whole family has been more expensive in 2022—and the USDA says inflation is going to make price hikes go up even more soon. In addition to paying more, though, some items for a few specific household members are actually difficult to find right now as empty shelves are being found in supermarkets across the country.
Both baby formula and pet food are facing shortages right now at the grocery store, according to shoppers and it's forcing some companies to react.
It's been months since the supply of baby formula was full. Since the year began, a huge recall for powdered Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare formulas was issued and supply has not been able to outpace demand. In mid-April, about 30% of popular brands at 11,000 stores were sold out, and now about 40% to 50% is gone. On Monday, May 8 White House Press Secretay Jenn Psaki said that the FDA is "working around the clock to address any possible shortages" as stores like Walmart, Target, Kroger, CVS, and Walgreens place purchase limits on how much parents can buy should there be any available.
Parents and caretakers have taken to social media to express frustration over the shortage.
However, pet owners are facing a similar situation. Aluminum can shortages have been plaguing grocery items since that pandemic began over two years ago, and unfortunately, some items are still taking a hit. Both canned dog and cat food are scarce at many grocery stores, shoppers say.
The decrease in supply has even forced one beloved grocery chain to discontinue six of its pet food items. Trader Joe's will no longer carry the Ocean Fish, Salmon & Rice Dinner Premium Cat Food, Turkey & Giblets Dinner Premium Cat Food, Grain Free Salmon Recipe Cat Food, Grain Free Turkey Recipe Cat Food, Grain Free Beef Recipe Dog Food, and the Grain Free Chicken Recipe Dog Food.
The grocery chain cites "inconsistent availability and ongoing sourcing issues" as the reason for the discontinuations, and says that once the remaining inventory is sold out, the six products will not be restocked. There are two other options shoppers still have to choose from, however.
As for those looking for baby formula, Costco has some that members even admit is a great deal.
