While Demi Lovato says that her recent weight loss is the result of getting to a healthier place mentally, she admits that her relationship with food and exercise have not always been healthy.

On a Feb. 2020 episode of model Ashley Graham's "Pretty Big Deal" podcast, Lovato admitted that she would frequently hit the gym multiple times a day. "I'd eat a meal, go work out," said Lovato. "That's not happiness to me. That's not freedom."

To help get herself into a healthier place with exercise, Lovato revealed that, in 2019, she'd taken time away from her workout plan to reset. "Embracing my body as it is naturally is why I took the month of October off the gym," she explained during the 2019 Teen Vogue Summit.

Lovato admitted in 2020 that she'd recently fired members of her team after she felt they were putting too much pressure on her to eat and look a certain way.

"If I was in my hotel room at night, they would take the phone out of the hotel room so I couldn't call room service. Or if there was fruit in my room, they took it out because that's extra sugar," Lovato told Ellen DeGeneres during a March 2020 interview. "It becomes dangerous to try to control someone's food when they're in recovery from an eating disorder."
