This Once-Bankrupt Restaurant Chain Is Now Selling Pizza at the Grocery Store
The restaurant industry endured one of the toughest years on record in 2020, with countless businesses filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as stay-at-home orders impacted foot traffic. Chuck E. Cheese filed for bankruptcy in June 2020.
At the time of the filing, the nostalgic chain had more than 600 locations across 47 states, plus more than $900 million in debt. Around 17,000 workers had been laid off due to the pandemic, and the 55-85 arcade games in each location hadn't been in use in months.
The famous pizza party chain was rescued at the end of 2020.
In an email, CEO David McKillips said the company had cleared more than $700 million in debt. The "new chapter" of the storied chain was slated to include reopening all previously closed locations, debuting a new pizza recipe, and introducing at-home Chuck E. Cheese experiences.
