Chipotle Is Giving Out Free Food This Week—Here's How to Get It
When it comes to National Burrito Day, Chipotle is basically the mascot. This year, for the April 7 food holiday, the chain is celebrating by doling out free burritos—but there's a catch… and it involves gaming in the metaverse.
If you're looking to get your hands on some free burritos tomorrow, and potentially earn free grub for a whole year (which is note-worthy, considering the chain's prices keep rising), here's what you need to know. And next, don't miss the 8 Worst Fast-Food Burgers to Stay Away From Right Now.
Starting tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. ET, Chipotle is inviting fans to win free burritos in real life by rolling virtual ones in the metaverse via the gaming site Roblox. The first 100,000 players to teleport back to 1993 (an homage to the year the Chipotle burrito was born) and enter a '90s-themed Chipotle location to roll digital burritos will make enough digital currency to exchange them for an entree code that can be redeemed on the Chipotle app, Chipotle's website, or in-person at a Chipotle restaurant for a free burrito.
One such available entree is the first-ever burrito inspired by Roblox — after tweeting out a recent poll, the chain came up with the Chipotle Burrito Builder Burrito, made with white rice, black beans, chicken, fresh tomato salsa, tomatillo red chili salsa, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, and guacamole.
Now, Roblox, as you may recall, is the same gaming site that has hosted previous promotions with Chipotle, including last Halloween's "free Boorito" event. The virtual extravaganza resulted in a real-life surge in demand that Chipotle employees couldn't keep up with, long wait times for customers, and even the crashing of the gaming site.
This time, both parties are hoping their promotion runs much more smoothly. The occasion also marks the first time a restaurant has ever served virtual food on Roblox, and Chipotle's first in-experience currency on the site.
As an added quirk, the '90s-theming of the Chipotle Burrito Builder allows players to don vintage clothing and hairstyles, like the Chipotle Foil Fanny Pack, Chipotle Pepper Chokers, and Chipotle Cheese Frosted Tips, as part of their "uniform" in the game. Feeling extra? You can opt to participate in bonus quests in which you'll be challenged to deliver burritos to customers for a chance to earn even more rewards.
Although National Burrito Day is just one day, the promo runs through April 13, and the top five players on the leaderboard by 11:59 p.m. PT each day will win the big prize: free burritos for a whole year.
But hey, if rolling burritos in the metaverse isn't your thing, you can still snag some free cheese. In honor of National Burrito Day, Chipotle Rewards members in real life can get a free side or topping of queso blanco with the purchase of an entree when they use the digital-only promo code "NBD2022."
