This Beloved Regional Grocery Chain Is Opening New, More Convenient Locations

Groceries will be front and center at the upcoming downsized locations.

If you've ever found yourself lost in a seemingly endless maze of supermarket aisles when all you need is one simple item, you'll appreciate a retailer's attempt to simplify its footprint.

That's exactly what grocery chain Meijer has in store for its busy shoppers. The Midwest retailer just announced it will be opening two smaller, easier-to-navigate Meijer Grocery store locations in southeast Michigan.

Kroger, Publix, H-E-B, and Other Grocery Stores Are Pulling This Medication From Shelves

Boasting over 250 superstores across six states, Meijer ranks as one of the largest privately-owned companies in America. Meijer supercenters offer consumers a unique "all in one" shopping experience. All under one roof, shoppers can browse groceries, electronics, clothes, sporting goods, and much, much more.

While there's certainly something convenient about crossing an entire day's errands off the to-do list with one trip, trying to find just one or two items in such a large store can be overwhelming and time-consuming. Sometimes you just want to get in, find what you need, and be on your way as fast as possible.

Enter the Meijer Grocery concept. These new brick-and-mortar locations will emphasize "simplified shopping" via a smaller, easier-to-navigate shop layout. A typical Meijer supercenter runs around 155,000 square feet. Meijer Grocery stores will range from 75,000 to 90,000 square feet.

The first two Meijer Grocery stores are set to open their doors early next year and will be located in southeast Michigan's Orion Township and Macomb Township. These smaller stores will focus on providing local communities with easier access to fresh foods, all while prioritizing a speedy shopping experience.

Meijer first began experimenting with smaller, more grocery-oriented locations in 2018 with the opening of Bridge Street Market in Grand Rapids.

"Our customers know they can count on us for the freshest foods and best value, which has always been at the core of what we do at Meijer," Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. "Meijer Grocery will now provide that same combination of freshness and value in a foods focused format in your local community."

Meijer Grocery stores will feature the following departments:

  • Fresh Produce
  • Fresh Meat Counter
  • Bakery equipped with in-store cake decorators
  • Full-service deli
  • Dry Grocery
  • Pharmacy
  • Health & beauty care
  • Baby, pets, and consumables
  • Card & party and floral

Another benefit of the smaller stores? It will even be easier to find convenient parking spots as parking will wrap around a singular corner entrance to optimize the number of available spaces near the door.

These new locations will also offer the same shopping conveniences available at Meijer supercenters, such as the mPerks customer rewards program, Shop and Scan frictionless checkout, and Meijer Home Delivery and Pickup.

"We're excited to provide our customers with yet another way to shop," said Don Sanderson, Group Vice President of Foods at Meijer. "This new concept store will not only provide our customers with everything they need on their weekly shopping trip, but also a quick and easy solution for when they realize they left the key ingredient off their list while cooking dinner."
