The Best Clothes To Wear For A Better Night's Sleep, Expert Says

These fabrics will keep you comfy all night long.
FACT CHECKED BY Alexa Mellardo

You already know that it's important to keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet if you want to get a good night's rest. But did you realize that your PJs can also make or break how well you snooze? You might not be aware of the best clothes to sleep in for a better night's rest, but don't fret, because we have you covered with all the details.

"Sleepwear plays a big role in getting restorative sleep," says Chris Winter, MD, neurologist, sleep specialist, and author of The Sleep Solution and The Rested Child. "If you know what to look for, you can choose a pair that combats just about anything that's making you uncomfortable."

While there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution, Dr. Winter says he generally recommends looking for breathable pajamas made from one or a combination of the following materials:

  • Bamboo
  • Linen
  • Performance fabrics (such as micromodal, spandex, or lycra)
  • Silk
  • Cotton
  • Synthetics (think: Tencel, acrylic, or rayon)
  • Flannel
  • Fleece

Whether you sleep hot, cold, sweaty, or tend to get scratchy, these fabrics are generally a safe bet, Dr. Winter tells us. Ready to find your perfect pair of PJs? To help you get a good night's rest, we've rounded up our favorite options based on Dr. Winter's fabric recs.
