5 Standing Exercises That Shrink Belly Pooch Faster Than Resistance Bands After 50

Expert-Recommended
These resistance-based standing moves can help tighten and firm your midsection.

Eliminating a belly pooch takes hard work and determination. It remains a common goal of many gym-goers because the belly is an easy area of the body where unhealthy fat can accumulate.

According to research, healthy men who performed weight training each day for 20 minutes accumulated less abdominal fat than those who performed aerobics for the same amount of time. But there are many ways to address this stubborn area of the body.

We spoke with Jacob Siwicki, founder and head coach of Siwicki Fitness, NCSF and AFAA certified, former top 1% globally ranked Equinox group fitness instructor (2019), Dartmouth economics graduate and former Dartmouth football player, fitness expert on FOX 5 DC, ranked #1 personal trainer in D.C. in 2021, who shares five standing exercises that can help shrink belly pooch faster than resistance bands after 50, and have listed them below to get you started.

Keep in mind that you can’t spot-reduce belly fat.

“These moves strengthen the muscles underneath, improve posture, and help the midsection look and feel more supported. Actually losing fat still comes down to nutrition, total activity, sleep, and sticking with it,” Siwicki explains, adding, “Resistance bands are useful, but they’re just a tool. Standing exercises with body weight or dumbbells force you to manage gravity, balance, posture, and coordination all at the same time. That carries over better to real life because real life is standing, reaching, carrying, bending, and changing direction.”

Dumbbell Halos

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold a dumbbell end-to-end at your right hip.
  3. Maintain a soft bend in the knees.
  4. Gradually bring the dumbbell up toward your opposite shoulder, then “halo” it around the back of your head.
  5. The dumbbell should end at your left hip.

Front Rack Marches

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold a dumbbell in each hand in a front rack position (resting at shoulder height).
  3. Slowly lift one knee to hip height, and lower.
  4. Repeat on the other side, keeping your marching-in-place smooth and controlled.

Cross-Body Deadlifts

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold a dumbbell in your right hand.
  3. Hinge at the hips while lowering the dumbbell toward your left side.
  4. Drive through your right foot to return to the start position.
  5. Repeat on the other side.

Lateral Lunges With Reach

  1. Stand tall with your feet outside hip-width.
  2. Shift your body weight to your right leg and step or lunge to the right.
  3. Press your hips back as you lower into a lateral lunge.
  4. Reach both arms toward the lunging side or the ground.
  5. Push through your right foot to return to the start position.
  6. Repeat on the other side.

Standing Wall Bird-Dog

  1. Stand tall, arm’s length away from a wall.
  2. Place your hands flat against the surface at shoulder level.
  3. Activate your core and plant your feet hip-width apart.
  4. Gradually extend your right arm overhead while lifting your left leg behind you.
  5. Return to the start position.
  6. Then, extend your left arm overhead and your right leg straight behind you.
  7. Continue to alternate.
